Asteya: The Yogic Principle of "Not Stealing"

by Di The Yoga Witch

Namaste Witchlings,

This is part of a blog series about the Yamas - the Five Ethical Principles of Yoga.  Previously we have discussed Ahisma (Non-Violence) and Satya (Truthfulness)

Let's delve deeper into the third Yama, Asteya, which translates to non-stealing. It may seem straightforward, but Asteya extends far beyond simply not taking physical objects that don't belong to us. It's a subtle and profound principle that touches upon our relationship with resources, time, and even ideas.

Asteya encourages us to examine our sense of entitlement and the subtle ways we might “steal” from others or the world around us. Consider these aspects:

Time: Are we respectful of others' time? Do we arrive late, monopolize conversations, or waste their time with unnecessary distractions? Time is a precious resource, and stealing it is a subtle form of theft.

Ideas and Intellectual Property: Do we give credit where credit is due? Do we acknowledge the sources of our information and inspiration? Plagiarism, even unintentional, is a violation of Asteya.

Resources: Are we mindful of our consumption? Do we take more than our fair share of resources, leaving less for others? This applies to everything from material goods to natural resources.

Energy: Do we drain the energy of those around us through negativity, complaining, or demanding attention? Being mindful of our energetic impact is a vital part of Asteya.

Boundaries: Do we respect the emotional, physical, and mental boundaries of others? Ignoring or violating these boundaries is a form of stealing their sense of safety and autonomy.

Asteya invites us to cultivate a sense of abundance and contentment. When we feel that we have enough, we are less likely to feel the need to take from others. It encourages us to appreciate the gifts we already possess and to share them generously.

In our practice, we can embody Asteya by:

 - Practicing gratitude for what we have.

 - Being mindful of our consumption habits

.

 - Giving credit to the sources of our inspiration.

 - Respecting the time and energy of others.

 - Setting and respecting healthy boundaries.

By cultivating Asteya, we create a more harmonious and equitable world, where everyone has access to the resources they need to thrive.

May your actions be guided by respect and your heart filled with contentment.
