Introducing a new blog series: The Eight Limbs of Yoga

by DiLynn Stephens, "The Yoga Witch"

As many of you know, my journey with yoga extends far beyond the physical asanas we practice on the mat. Yoga, at its heart, is a philosophy, a way of living, a path to self-discovery and union with the divine. And at the core of this philosophy lies Patanjali's Eight Limbs of Yoga, a comprehensive guide to a meaningful and fulfilling life.

Here on the SPA blog I will be sharing a series of eight blog posts in which we will dive deep into each of these limbs, exploring their practical applications in our modern lives, and weaving in threads of witchcraft and spiritual practice.

We'll journey together through the eight limbs of Yoga that include:

  • the yamas (ethical restraints),
  • the niyamas (observances),
  • asana (physical postures),
  • pranayama (breath control),
  • pratyahara (sense withdrawal),
  • dharana (concentration),
  • dhyana (meditation),
  • and finally, samadhi (liberation).

Think of this series as a roadmap, a tool to navigate the complexities of our inner and outer worlds. Each limb offers a unique perspective and practice, building upon the previous one to create a holistic approach to well-being.

Why am I so passionate about sharing this ancient wisdom? Because I've witnessed its transformative power in my own life and in the lives of my students. These teachings are not just theoretical concepts; they are living principles that can guide us towards greater peace, clarity, and connection.

In the coming weeks, we'll explore questions like:

  • How can we integrate the yamas and niyamas into our daily interactions and ethical choices?
  • How can asana and pranayama deepen our connection to our bodies and breath?
  • How can pratyahara, dharana, and dhyana cultivate inner stillness and focus?
  • And ultimately, how can we move towards samadhi, a state of profound unity and liberation?

We will also look at how each of these limbs can be viewed through the lens of modern witchcraft, and how they can be used to strengthen your practice. I will be sharing some of my own experiences, and some helpful tips for your own journey.

I invite you to join me on this journey of self-discovery. Whether you're a seasoned yogi or new to the practice, there's something here for everyone. Let's embark on this adventure together, exploring the depths of yoga and unlocking the potential within ourselves.

Stay tuned for our first installment, where we'll begin with the yamas.
